Whale Season
Every year between May and November, the east coast of Australia comes alive with the spectacular acrobatic displays of humpback whales.
The Australian coastline offers abundant opportunities to observe various species of whales on their annual migration. Spectators on the east and west coasts have the chance to enjoy their own whale show twice a year, when the mammals travel to and from Antarctica. At the end of summer, they begin the long journey north to warmer waters for the breeding and calving season, as the calves don't yet have enough blubber to withstand the winter temperatures. Between the months mentioned, it is possible to spot southern right whales travelling to the temperate breeding waters of South Australia and Victoria, while the energetic humpback whales head north to the Great Barrier Reef and Kimberley, and the orcas congregate on the southern coast of Western Australia.
